Level 3 Certificate in Applied Therapeutic Skills

This four day course will help experienced carers and professionals deepen their understanding and skills for working with children and young people. This training is an experiential course to enable experienced carers and professionals to deepen their understanding and further develop their skills in working with children and young people in supporting their emotional & mental health and wellbeing.

Description

The programme seeks to help participants develop a wide range of strategies and approaches to supporting children and young people who present with mental and emotional difficulties. Drawing on the quality statements and guidance of NICE in effective interventions, this training provides participants with a thorough understanding of best practice.

The training is structured over six units and can be delivered as an Ofqual regulated qualification or as a CPD event.

Structure and content:

  • Attachment Theory in Practice

This unit focuses on attachment theory, the interaction between child and adult attachment styles and promotes strategies for developing and securing helpful relationships. It also explores the concept of developmental needs as they relate to resilience and well-being.

  • Unconscious Processes

This unit introduces the concept and reality of transference, counter-transference and projection, and the impact of these in developing sustainable and positive relationships.

  • Understanding and Reducing the Effects of Shame

Participants will explore the purpose of shame, know how to recognise shame and defences against shame; and how courage, compassion and connection can encourage processing and begin to develop ways to manage shame based behaviours.

  • Creating a Secure Alliance

This unit focuses on creating a safe and secure alliance with children and young people through attunement, providing emotional holding and containment, communicating empathy and hope, then providing opportunities for the practice and rehearsal of self-help skills and new ways of relating to others.

  • Relational Listening Skills

This practical unit will equip participants with in-depth skills in relational listening, including why these skills are important, how to listen relationally, blocks to relational listening, how to manage powerful feelings and young people who aren’t willing to talk, plus strategies for self-support.

  • Creative Problem Solving

During this unit participants will be taught creative and therapeutic techniques for dealing with conflict, raising awareness of intra-personal difficulties and supporting the development of emotional literacy and resilience.
